Black and White Canvas Art What Type of Pencils
What is so dandy about cartoon on black paper with colored pencils?
Colored pencil is a fabulous medium to work with. It gives you a lot of control and the colors can be quite easily blended into one another.
You can piece of work on quite an intricate scale with color pencils. I find they are a great medium to utilise to capture bright and striking subject matter in drawing.
When you are working with colored pencils on white paper the colors are vivid and sharp. It is quite easy to get highlights and render shadows. However, for this exercise, I have decided to do a drawing with colored pencil on black paper in order to demonstrate how the colour changes on the newspaper, and how to get brilliant colour.
Firstly, y'all must take into consideration that when y'all depict with colored pencils on dark or blackness paper you have to be aware that the blackness newspaper absorbs the brightness of your pencils' hues. There are a few techniques to work around this.
The one I am going to demonstrate in this article is called layering. It is also important to remember that yous cannot erase colored pencil like you would pb pencil or graphite. For this reason, y'all should always draw the outline of your bailiwick thing lightly in pencil so that yous can erase areas if necessary.
When using your colored pencils, you must work in lite layers using gentle strokes. This also allows for errors to exist corrected hands equally you lot develop your cartoon.

Which black paper should you use?
**This folio may contain chapter links to products I accept used or recommend. If you purchase something from this folio, I may receive a small per centum of the sale at no extra toll to yous.**
There are iii types of black paper I would recommend.
- The Arteza black sketch pad with thirty sheets. This comes in A4 or A3 and has a lovely shine quality to it.
- The Derwent black newspaper sketchbook . Skillful quality paper and with a deep black colour.
- Faber-Castell Mixed Media screw-bound pad . This has a wonderful velvet texture to it and piece of cake to work on with colored pencils.
Colored pencils for drawing on black paper
I chose to piece of work with Derwent Inktense pencils as I have really enjoyed using them in the past. They are used by and large as watercolor pencils, and are chosen Inktense because of the rich inky finish they go out on the folio once brushed with water.
They tin also exist used on a range of surfaces from canvas to cloth to paper and become permanent once left to dry out.
In this practice I am using the Derwent Inktense aslope Faber-Castell Goldfaber pencils to complete my drawing. I take mostly worked with Derwent Inktense pencils in the past, and so information technology was good to test out a dissimilar range of color pencils. The Faber-Castell Goldfaber pencils are fabricated from a soft wax paint. This means they take a soft core and the colour is hands transferred onto the newspaper. They are also quite stiff and the cadre doesn't suspension easily if dropped.
Before I began with my drawing, I compared a few colors from each brand. I specifically looked at the opaqueness of the white, xanthous, green, blueish, purple and red in both brands as these were some of the colors I was using.
"The definition of the term Opaque is essentially the contrary of translucent. In other words, some brands of colored pencils are more translucent, and others are more opaque. Those that are more opaque have a stronger or heavier coverage on a page."
Test out your color pencils
If y'all are using new pencils and you lot aren't sure most how opaque they are on paper, fill up a folio with lines and marks. Exam out layering your colors on top of one another. This will give y'all a bit more confidence before you begin because you will have a meliorate understanding of what your pencils can do, and how you tin reach it.
The Derwent Inktense are fabricated from a lovely and soft pigment core, and it's quite easy to color a large area with them. Their colors are beautifully intense, but sometimes information technology is hard to blend a lighter color on top of them.
The Faber-Castell Goldfaber are lite to the affect and lovely to hold, and the colors tend to be brighter and lighter. The Derwent are richer and deeper. They are both excellent quality pencils and then it really depends on what you lot desire from your drawing. On blackness paper, the Faber-Castell Goldfaber definitely stood out more than as they were lighter overall.

In this image you tin can see that I tested out the yellowish Derwent Inktense pencil on its ain. So through gentle strokes I layered it on to the white Faber-Castell Goldfaber.
As you can come across, layering it on top of the white gives it a more than solid appearance with less black coming through.
The master technique I utilize with colour pencils when working on black paper, is to layer colors on peak of 1 some other to develop solidity of form.
What I want you to accept annotation of here is that, most importantly, I showtime off past putting downwardly the get-go layer of white over my subject affair, peculiarly in the lightest areas. I get out my dark areas black and start working color over the white.

Here is an instance of how I layered yellowish on top of red, on summit of white. The colors blend beautifully when yous layer them. The combination of Derwent Inktense and Faber-Castell Goldfaber work well together.
It is important that you practice some color experimentation earlier you begin. Sometimes the tiptop color isn't what you thought it would exist, and it's difficult to modify the hue once y'all have several layers on superlative of one some other.
Okay so in one case you have explored and experimented with layering your color pencils you can begin.
Step ane – Sketch your outline

Earlier you first putting pencil to paper, spend some time advisedly observing your chosen subject matter. You so can begin to draw the outline of the subject thing every bit well equally identify the shapes of the highlights and shadow areas.
Here I started to lightly draw the outline of my parrot's head in atomic number 82 pencil. A bonus of working on black paper is that pencil marks aren't hands seen, you tin can easily erase them and y'all can piece of work over them with the colour pencil.
Here I outlined the main shapes, shadows and highlights.
Step ii – Fill in white areas

Use your white pencil to define the lighter and brighter areas of your field of study matter. In the lightest areas of your subject matter, you tin can use several layers of white pencil to make it even more opaque. Leave your darkest areas blackness.
My parrot has a lot of bright color on her plume. I used white to create a base on which to layer the bright colors. I worked in gentle strokes creating a large area of white. I left the area around the eye black and added more white to the elevation of the head and the top of the bill every bit these are the lightest parts of the parrot.

Step 3 – Start adding offset colors

Yous tin and then start layering your next lightest colour onto the white areas.
Here I layered xanthous onto the beak and the chest. You can work in small-scale round motions if you want a smoother effect, or employ cross-hatching or hatching for a more textured advent.
Footstep 4 – Build up colors

Move onto your next color. Work on your drawing from the side opposite to your dominant mitt. So, if you are right-handed, piece of work from the top left-hand corner, and move down towards your correct-manus side.
This is a actually useful tip because it prevents y'all from smudging over drawing that yous have already completed. You lot tin can apply this tip to any course of drawing or painting!
In this epitome, I layered reddish and orange to the nib and kept the highlight white on top of the neb. I added a deep purple for the shadow on the underside bottom nib.
Pace 5 – Farther layering of color

Make full out your colored areas.
I layered a light blue on the white pencil of the head. I wanted to build up to the vivid blue that you see in the last image.
Stride 6 – Add terminal details

Color your last areas and add detail.
Lastly, I added the green pencil hither, and besides worked into the heart.
It of import to remember that you lot can use your black pencil on the blackness newspaper. Using your black pencil deepens the colour of black paper and is good for defining outlines and erasing mistakes! If you accept colored an area incorrectly, you lot can go over it with the blackness pencil and remove the colour.
Conclusion
Exam out your color pencils before you begin drawing and layer your color pencils to create depth and vibrant hues!
I also recommend that you invest in a sketch book to proceed record of your drawings as yous go along. This will really provide you with an opportunity to reflect on how you have improved and keep track of whatever creative experiments you have tried.
Many artists find a sketchbook to be an invaluable tool for inspiring new ideas for artwork!
